5 MINUTES WITH
MAKEUP ARTIST AND TUTOR AT QC MAKEUP ACADEMY
I CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT … the sun, sea and sand. Growing up in Sydney, I have always naturally been drawn to the ocean, and as much as I loved living and working in London, the ocean was always calling me. There is something so mentally purifying about watching the waves crash, so energising about going for a run on the sand, and diving into the waves.
I RELAX BY … exercising. It is the one thing that resets my internal clock and makes me feel fantastic. I used to run for miles and even completed a few marathons, but now I prefer more social sports like beach volleyball. A good yoga session also always rebalances me.
I LIKE TO … learn new things. As human beings, sometimes we can be so stagnant in our routines. I find learning keeps the brain young and active. When it comes to makeup artistry, I always take it upon myself to try a new product or master a different technique every week. It keeps my work interesting, and gets the creative juices flowing.
I THINK BEAUTY IS … first and foremost, confidence. From confidence stems so much – the twinkle in the eye, the brilliance of a smile, the glow of the skin. Secondly, beauty comes from good health. Most often we are too harsh on our bodies, drinking too much, sunbathing, demolishing our skin with harsh abrasives and exfoliants, or not getting enough sleep. We need to take good care of ourselves and allow our true beauty to shine. Makeup is the icing on the cake!
MY FAVOURITE BEAUTY TREATMENT THAT LEAVES ME LOOKING AND FEELING NATURALLY BEAUTIFUL IS … a dead sea face mask I create at home with dead sea algae and double distilled rosewater, followed my massaging in organic argan oil into my skin.
MY NUMBER ONE BEAUTY TIP IS … to be gentle with yourself and others. Take time to rest, relax, sleep, drink plenty of water and protect your skin from the elements. We all lead such hectic lives, and there is so much pressure on women nowadays to work hard, have a family and look fantastic – all at the same time. We put too much pressure on ourselves and forget to just stop and enjoy the moment.
WHAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PEARL OF WISDOM THAT YOU WISH YOU COULD BROADCAST TO THE WORLD? As women we are constantly pressured to ‘copy this celebrity look’ or ‘follow that model’s diet.’ Trying to copy someone else, or follow too closely in their footsteps, will only incite feelings of inferiority or jealousy. The more you stand firm on your own convictions, the less you will have the urge to apologise for your appearance, feelings or actions. You won’t have to constantly justify yourself or try to please others. Ultimately, be true to yourself and be confident in who you are.
WHAT IS IT INSPIRES YOU TO DO WHAT YOU DO? There are so many things that inspire and motivate me as a makeup artist. With makeup artistry, it is my love of creativity. I have always written, painted and loved everything about generating ideas and concepts. Makeup for me is about artistry, it is about interpreting the contours of a face, playing with light and dark, colour and texture, while at the same time creating a flawless look that really complements the human form. I also love collaboration and working with people. Film sets, photo shoots and video productions are like second homes. I thrive in a collaborative environment and love seeing a project come to fruition. When it comes to teaching, it is the love of knowledge sharing and being an active part of building the next generation of international makeup talent that really motivates me.
