Beyond ‘Green Washing’

1. PRANALINE  acupressure pranamat eco ; 2. HAUT bio-mineral foundation ; 3. BE GENKI tranquil pure oil blend and body oil ; 4. FIRST LIGHT ORGANICS baby powder and baby oil ; 5. LIVE NATIVE essential woman frangipani fresh moisturiser ; 6. MOROCCAN NATURAL organic argan oil and African liquid black soap ; 7. AEOS cleansing oil de-maq ; 8. JOSH ROSEBROOK deep nourishing shampoo and conditioner.

One topic that is particularly consuming me at present is ‘green washing’. Yes, I know I shouldn’t let it bother me. But the more I look at what is written about certain products and brands the more amazed I am about the increasing amount of mis-information out there. Why this bothers me is that the people who are genuinely desiring to reduce their exposure to pesticide residue and other harmful toxins commonly found in beauty and personal care products are being lied to and deceived, either by brands who are more concerned with profit margins, or by those in a position of influence who haven’t done thorough research.

Let me put it this way to help explain the conundrum that is consuming me … no-one buys a can of coca cola thinking that they are going to drink a freshly-made nutritious drink that will provide optimum nutrition and a healthy radiant complexion. Coca Cola is what it is. For me, a can of coke is the perfect hangover cure. It’s like ‘draino’ for the body. And it serves an effective purpose in situations like this. Coca Cola don’t promote their drink as being beneficial for health and longevity. So, from my point-of-view, there’s no deception. But when it comes to ‘natural’ and ‘organic’ beauty care … the retail shelves and internet is flooded with so many illusions that it’s completely understandable why most people are confused and deceived. After all, who has the time to research all of this?

This is where I become a super geek. I love discovering the best in natural beauty – those hidden gems with integrity that deliver fabulous results. And I love jumping right down that rabbit hole to ask questions and spend years challenging my own beliefs, so that I can grow, and become more aware of what truly is going to make a difference, to me, to you, and to the beautiful planet we share.

If you would like some tips on how to avoid being deceived by ‘green washing’ please keep reading.

If the essential oils are not organic, wild crafted or biodynamic, please don’t be misled in to thinking that they are the ‘most pure’. They’re not. It’s highly likely that they may contain pesticide residue from ‘modern’ farming practices. Furthermore, the essential oil market is highly corrupt. There are many different grades of essential oils and different type of extraction methods. Not all essential oils are created equal.
The ‘hidden gem’ solution: BE GENKI essential oils are sourced from reputable and ethical suppliers who are independently certified organic by the ACO (Australian Certified Organic) and OFC (Organic Food Chain) so that you can experience the benefits of aromatherapy as nature intended. BE GENKI invites you to bring the spa experience in to your own home so that self-care can be an every day possibility, and holistic happiness a reality. > shop this product

If your mineral makeup contains either bismuth oxychloride, titanium dioxide or mica, it is not going to help improve the appearance of your skin. More worryingly it is highly likely going to damage your beautiful complexion. Especially if you have sensitive skin. [1] The bismuth oxychloride is a known skin irritant. [2] Titanium dioxide should never be in loose powders due to the damage the tiny particles can create when inhaled. Titanium dioxide is also responsible for that ‘white effect’ in photos. [3] Mica can irritate the skin causing micro tears on the skin, especially around the nose and mouth, due to the way in which the shimmery frosts are cut. Mica may also enhance fine lines and dry areas of the skin and has no beneficial properties for the skin whatsoever. These 3 common fillers tend to fill and stretch the walls of pores and slowly suffocate skin.
The ‘hidden gem’ solution: HAUT vegan cosmetics provide an unprecedented range of makeup products for even the most sensitive of skins, containing ingredients like arrowroot powder, glacial clay and freeze dried superfoods that are skin soothing, assist wound repair, and help prevent breakouts. Beneficial for all skin types to help improve the texture and clarity of your skin. Truly unique for a makeup range. > shop this range

In their vulnerability, babies depend upon our care and the choices we make for them. Babies are especially vulnerable, so it is vitally important to protect them from the harmful effects of the toxic chemicals that have become ‘normal’ in most personal care products. As the skin is our largest organ, and anything applied to it is easily absorbed into the bloodstream, we believe product ingredients should be safe enough to eat. Applying talcum powder or mineral oil to a baby’s skin is simply not acceptable. [1] Talc is considered extremely toxic and is closely related to the potent carcinogen asbestos.  The main issue for babies is the possibility that they will inhale this (not to mention you) and those particles will get in the lungs. If inhaled, it can lead to allergic reactions similar to hay fever. [2] Mineral oil, a petroleum by-product, interfere’s with the skin’s natural function. It creates a barrier over the skin which prevents the skin from ‘breathing’ (a normal function). This may lead to skin disorders and dermatitis.
The ‘hidden gem’ solution: FIRST LIGHT ORGANIC baby products are made from the highest quality certified organic and biodynamic natural ingredients that are gentle and beneficial for your baby’s skin and wellbeing. Never before has there been so many skin care brands claiming to be natural, organic and pure, when on closer inspection they clearly are not. Sure they might have a couple of natural ingredients but mixed in together with toxic synthetics, naturally-derived fillers and foaming agents, or natural oils that have been deodorised, refined, bleached, extracted via toxic process called hexane solvent extraction, or a long list of other methods. And none of these methods are required to be listed on the label, irrespective of whether the ‘natural oil’ is contaminated with known chemicals that can be irritating to the skin or toxic to our internal organs. So when it comes to a retailer choosing their products, a simple glance over the ingredient list is not enough to shout out to the world that the product is pure and natural.
The ‘hidden gem’ solution: LIVE NATIVE’s truly unique range of skin care is one of a small handful of brands that can truly claim to be genuinely pure, natural, organic and nature-intact. The level to which the sourcing of ingredients for each LIVE NATIVE product is carried out is outstanding and impressive. As you can imagine, the improvement to the look and feel of your skin is unbelievably fabulous too! After the first application you can notice the difference.  > shop this range
The ‘hidden gem’ solution: MOROCCAN NATURAL source their virgin, natural and organic ingredients from ethical producers so that you can experience the popular and effective skin, hair and body treatment argan oil in its nature-intact state. AEOS Cleansing-Oil-de-Maq
The ‘hidden gem’ solution: AEOS (Active Energised Organic Skincare) cleansing oil de-maq is without a doubt the best makeup remover I’ve come across. And believe me, I’ve tried a truck load. Nothing quite compares to the ease in which it removes makeup gently, whilst hydrating the skin as well. And yes, the rest of the range is fabulous too, especially if you love the idea of receiving the benefits of crystals and gems. > shop this range.
The ‘hidden gem’ solution: JOSH ROSEBROOK’s range of cult-status hair care has to be experienced to be believed. Suitable for colour treated hair. Not a naturally-derived foaming agent (i.e. synthetic irritant) in sight. This is as pure and effective as it gets folks. It’s no wonder the JOSH ROSEBROOK skin care products are equally as pure and effective. > shop this range

If your acupressure mat has a foam interior, what is the benefit of the cotton cover, if underneath is a synthetic sponge, which completely blocks the air circulation, does not allow your skin to breathe and may cause an allergy? Also after a short time of usage a certain amount of dust is produced by this foam rubber, which again gives you the risk of allergy. A second thought … what is the benefit of the cotton cover, if plastic spikes are glued all over the cotton material, again blocking the air circulation and causing skin allergy? At the same time, the glued spikes that are mostly made of poor quality plastic bend, deform and fall down after several uses, doing more damage than good. When you are lying on spikes for the first few minutes, your body feels the heat, which is caused by increase in blood circulation. At this point your body is likely to start sweating, and the acupressure mat should allow the air to go through the materials and allow your body to breathe.
The ‘hidden gem’ solution: The only acupressure mat currently available that can claim superior design and eco materials is the PRANALINE  acupressure pranamat eco. Made with a coconut husk interior, cotton and linen exterior, non-allergic materials and high-quality lotus spikes that do not degrade over time. > shop this product

Our brand and product selection is based on thorough research, based on 16+ years of industry experience. If we are not 100% convinced that an ingredient is safe, we won’t stock the product. ‘Natural’ and ‘organic’ products and online shops are becoming more prevalent these days. Whilst this is great, it also is rather confusing, as many ‘natural’ and ‘organic’ brands out there contain toxic and harmful ingredients that sound ‘natural’ or ‘naturally-derived’ but are indeed irritating to the skin and internal organs. If you are unsure about any ingredient, product or brand, please don’t hesitate to get in touch in the comment box below.

  1. I love that you take the time to do some real research and that you’re trying to reveal the ,intentional or not, hidden unhealthy ingredients. I’m from Germany so it’s not always that easy to get in touch with Autralian brands etc, but I do like your recommendations.

  2. Thank you Sarah xox If you ever are keen to get in touch with Australian brands please don’t hesitate to get in touch as I’d be more than happy to put you in touch with them. With love x Sam
