5 minutes with my beautiful mum
My mum turns 72 this month. Naturally I couldn’t resist sharing her health and beauty tips with you, as she was and is my first inspiration for embracing natural beauty, from the inside out, and from the outside in. As a little girl she always encouraged us to eat healthily and was there to prepare and cook all 3 meals from whole foods. When I decided I didn’t want to drink dairy milk at about age 12 she embraced it wholeheartedly and encouraged me to choose what I felt was best for me. She taught me how to cook, and for this I am truly grateful, as there are few things that I love more than gathering foods from my backyard veggie patch to prepare a home-cooked meal infused with love for whoever is sitting at our dining table. As a teenager she encouraged me to practice yoga, which I have been practicing ever since, and that which I don’t know how I’d ever live without. As most of you can imagine and relate to, the list goes on and on, as our mums are indeed something to cherish. But one of the most treasured gifts from my mum that I am particularly grateful for – apart from her choosing to marry the best dad I could ever wish for – is her integrity with embracing her own imperfectly perfect beauty, and not succumbing to the illusions, delusions and insanities of society. And it shows … on her skin, in her mind, her heart and the youthful energy she has for life and living. It has always baffled me when skin care ‘professionals’ declare that you need more active scientific formulas as you get older (aka expensive synthetics severely lacking in nature’s nutrients). I CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT … sunshine, fresh air and water. I’ll always remember when I was living / working and travelling in Europe from age 18 – 21. After experiencing my first really cold snow / white winter in Heidelberg Germany, Spring arrived and I drove down through Austria to Italy – despite the beautiful rivers and lakes. The feeling of seeing the blue of the Mediterranean was overwhelming, and I knew then I could never live far from the wide expanse of the ocean, sand, sunshine and fresh air.
I RELAX BY … practicing yoga – it has been an essential part of my life for over 50 years. It keeps me well balanced, flexible, energised and calm.
I LIKE TO … be active. Ever since I was a little girl my mother started me off in a class of eurythmics (movement to music) and then in my teens it was ballroom dancing. My favourite time at school was sport, whether it be athletics, basketball, hockey or tennis. It also is a vital part of my life and still is having played competitive tennis for a good part of my married years and I now have switched to golf
I THINK BEAUTY IS … the inner soul and like all things, it has to be nurtured. What you put into your body is just as important as the nurturing from the outside. Having been exposed to so many cultures at an early stage of my life I became very interested in food and cooking and love to experiment with good wholesome, organic produce with which this country of ours is blessed.
MY FAVOURITE BEAUTY TREATMENT THAT LEAVES ME LOOKING AND FEELING NATURALLY BEAUTIFUL IS … a massage followed by a body exfoliant and natural organic moisturiser to nourish the skin.
WHAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PEARL OF WISDOM THAT YOU WISH YOU COULD BROADCAST TO THE WORLD? Be true to yourself, love what you see in the mirror, be kind, and take time out to really see the beauty surrounding you each day.
