I think I could count the number of times on one hand, that I’ve used fake tan. I’ve never been a big fan of it.
Why? It contains a huge array of toxic synthetic chemicals. It looks terrible. And it stinks.

And before you come at me with all the fabulous new natural self-tanners that have been popping up all over the place, please stop. They still stink. Yes, I’ve smelt them, from 10 feet away. They still contain questionable ingredients such as DHA (dihydroxyacetone, known to create free radical damage to skin). And they still look like you’re wearing fake tan. This is all fine and good if you’re going for that look. And hey, everyone is different, so whatever works best for you, then go for it!

But if you are truly searching for a natural looking toxin-free self tanner, then please, you are far more intelligent than you give yourself credit for, and the only thing that is clouding your judgment are the illusions and delusions that we as women so often believe, or wish to believe within the beauty industry.

When I received the email from Jo at HAUT COSMETICS that they were releasing a SELF TAN, I was waaaaay excited. Why? Because HAUT pushes the boundaries and exceeds expectations for genuine natural and organic cosmetics that deliver superior results. Where other ‘natural’ and ‘organic’ companies are still using mica in their makeup (a known skin irritant) and titanium dioxide in their loose powders (a BIG no-no!), HAUT finds other alternatives that are safe and help to heal the skin.

So, as you can guess, the HAUT CARAMEL TAN is 100% DHA-FREE.

With a trip to sunny Spain on the horizons and a suitcase full of short skirts, I seized this as the perfect opportunity to road test the HAUT CARAMEL TAN. In to the bathroom I went, to exfoliate my pins. Being overly cautious, my first application of the self-tanner was very light, as the last thing I wanted was to wake up with streaky smelly carrot legs. Upon waking I didn’t notice a huge difference. PERFECT! So, I dipped my toe in a little deeper and applied a second coat. The next morning, I couldn’t believe my eyes … my legs looked like my legs, except more bronzed. The kind of bronze that is obtained from lolling about in the sunshine. No streaks. No hint of orange. No smell. Just me and my bronzed legs. A DREAM COME TRUE!

What I learnt from jumping down the fake tan rabbit hole, is that the use of natural ingredient ERYTHRULOSE (sugar component from red berries) found in the HAUT CARAMEL TAN is that which helps stimulate the tan colour, and that the tan builds gradually (i.e. you don’t see instant tan results). The tan will reveal itself gradually and naturally over 2 days. And it’s this erythrulose that is responsible for the natural looking tan colour, as opposed to DHA that gives an ‘orange’ tone and streak effect.

What I love most about the HAUT CARAMEL TAN is that it looks natural. It’s impossible to apply a coat that makes you look like a freak. So there’s no risk of getting it “wrong”. Making this the PERFECT option for those of you who like to apply fake tan to your face.

What I also love is that there are absolutely no questionable toxic ingredients such as DHA.

DHA (dihydroxyacetone) has always been questionable. When applied to the skin it has been found to generate high amounts of free radical damage, as well as inhibiting the production of vitamin D. There are studies that link use of DHA with irritation to the skin. DHA is found in various organic and natural self-tanners, and irrespective of whether it is of a natural source or not, DHA is still DHA, and with it comes the risks.

The HAUT CARAMEL TAN also contains red raspberry seed oil which is a toxin-free, full-spectrum, natural SPF with wonderful anti-ageing properties, making it a beautiful multi-tasker packed with nourishing ingredients for a healthy, glowing and youthful looking complexion.

As always, at we do thorough research and only stock the best in genuine natural beauty that works. If a product contains ingredients that are known to cause harm to you and your body we simply look for the most pure and effective alternative.

  1. how deceiving is the way the producers write the ingredients… i dont speak about this blog, but about the industry of self tanners… dha is also sugar derived from plants and some dermatologists say it could cause cancer… sugar, even sugar ingested in sweets, its known to help cancer tumors grow, and the plant derived sugar from self tanners was demonstrated by some scientists to cause dna mutations in humans….. its on the internet, available info…. this self tanner promotes itself as dha free, but it has erithrulose, which is similar to dha, i mean it is also plant derived sugar… much more dangerous than the food grade one… this self tanner also has sugar cane extract and sugar maple extract (non food grade ones)… same…. i dont think it is safe… i think the bio self tanners are equally dangerous to the regular ones in terms of dha.. its true they are free of other toxic and carcinogen ingredients, but isnt erithrulose enough, or other non-food sugar based ingredients (similar to dha)?
