I’ll never tire of confessing that one of the things I love most about what I do is to meet and interview people who inspire the socks off me. If you haven’t yet checked out the Instagram page of @AmazingAmeliaHill please do. This is one beautiful woman who is sharing little pearls of inspiration that always makes me stop in my tracks to demand more of myself. And yes, Amelia is exactly that … amazing!
I CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT … Due to a severe form of MCS/Multiple Chemical Sensitivity, I have been confined to one room for over five years. I have lived separated from all things I thought I could never live without … my precious family and friends, my favourite collections of books, art, clothing, furnishings … as well as fun times, belly laughs, walks on the beach, delicious foods, travel .. and hugs. Yep, I miss them too.
When my world was suddenly stripped bare of all those wonderful things, I was afraid of the emptiness I would be faced with. But instead, within that emptiness, I found my greatest gifts … my fighting spirit, my courage …and I found the space to become the best version of myself possible. I found my self-esteem, my self-belief … and, most importantly, I found ME. And, now that I’ve uncovered that, I never want to be without it.
I RELAX BY … I’ve spent a heap of time laying in bed. Years in fact. Some people may think I’m lucky. But, with a strong desire to live life to the fullest, being confined to bed due to un-wellness, never feels very relaxing. When I really need to chill out & recharge my senses, I close my eyes and dive head first into a creative visualisation. Here, in this virtual reality, I am unlimited. Here I am glowing with health and vitality. I can go anywhere. I can do anything. I can laugh. I can dance. I can walk in Central Park … and, it feels amazing!
I LIKE TO … look on the bright side. Learning to reframe experiences, memories & beliefs and look at my life from a brave new perspective has been transformational.
I THINK BEAUTY IS … self-realisation, freedom, a spark of inspiration, acts of unconditional love. And, nothing feels more beautiful than when something or someone resonates in perfect unison with your heart.
MY NUMBER ONE BEAUTY TIP IS … to value your body and take care of your health. Live a chemical free lifestyle. Choose organic products. A healthy body gives you the energy to live life at a 10, but it also makes your eyes sparkle, your hair shine and your skin glow!
WHAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PEARL OF WISDOM THAT YOU WISH YOU COULD BROADCAST TO THE WORLD? I believe that if you dig deep, really deep … even in the face of incomprehensible fear, heartbreak, or the most challenging of circumstances, including the game-changing experience of serious illness, you will discover the true depth of your courage, commitment inner fighting spirit, and what great feats you’re truly capable of. You will know firsthand that you are a survivor, that you’ve got what it takes, and that there is nothing you cannot do, be or overcome.
WHAT IS IT INSPIRES YOU TO DO WHAT YOU DO? I have received so many messages from people all over the globe, from people on their own healing journeys. Many also living with MCS. They say, “thank you” for being a voice for those who are suffering. One girl told me.. “When it all gets too hard and I want to give up, I think about you and say, if Amelia can do it, so can I.” I am truly humbled.
People are really really suffering with this condition. Along with chronic ill health & physical struggle, many lose their family & friends, their careers, homes and possessions. Many more are permanently isolated from the outside world, unable to access basic health care & support.
We need urgent research. We need community support & correct diagnosis. We need treatment, we need cures.
By sharing my story and what I have learned, I hope to not only raise awareness for MCS/Multiple Chemical Sensitivity. CFS/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. EHS/Electrohypersensitivity and other ‘invisible’ illnesses that are often misunderstood and misdiagnosed. But also, I hope to inspire others who might be on their own healing quest to stay focussed on big dreams and awesome outcomes no matter what obstacles they may face.
Amelia Hill used to be a freelance photographic stylist & writer for clients such as House & Garden, Real Living Magazine, Country Road and MG Cars. She ran her own fashion label at age 20 and had big dreams, but at age 33 after 20 years of misdiagnosis, Amelia’s body just ‘crashed’. She was bedridden, too weak to care for herself and severely hypersensitive and ‘allergic’ to almost everything in the environment. Reactions became worse, more disabling and sometimes life-threatening. To delve deeper, this means disabling ‘allergic’ reactions to a large number of everyday products and chemicals such as inks, adhesives, furnishings, fabrics, building materials, fragrance, cleaning and personal care products, car exhaust, pesticides and MANY more. And then there’s the electrical sensitivity, which means reactions to computers, phones, wireless and appliances etc. The reactions include indescribable fatigue, muscle weakness, (unable to move or speak) and respiratory difficulties. She feels unwell 90% of the time, and spends every day lying in bed or sitting in a chair.
Amelia has spent 5 years roombound, the last 2 years in a sealed room stripped bare of all possible triggers. Simply a tiled floor and fold-out bed. She consumes a mono-rotation diet on 6 foods, and in June had dental surgery in the kitchen. Amelia speaks with people through a glass wall. Her mum a full-time carer.
Currently plans are underway to build a specially designed ‘Mod Green Pod’ aka ‘Safe House’ built from inert and safe materials. This will support Amelia’s healing and provide greater independent living.
Amelia hopes that she can inspire others to stay focused on their dreams no matter what obstacles they face.
