WORDS BY SAMANTHA SAMPLE, BE NATURALLYOU
I have been dreaming of a day at Daylesford Farm ever since visiting their Westbourne Grove cafe/store in London, complete with deliciously fresh and organic produce, casual and cool cafe, beautifully stylish homewares and designer chic decor. Surely the “mothership” must be all of this and more!
After an easy two-hour drive from London we arrive in the beautiful countryside of the English Cotswolds. The one thing I love about a weekend ‘getaway’ in England is the lushness and infinite shades of green. What a joy it is to be amongst nature with fresh air filling my lungs. As we roll up to Daylesford I instantly feel the weight on my shoulders ease. It’s been a particularly busy week and there is nothing more that I need than some ‘me’ time and tender-loving-care for my body, inside and out.
First stop is the Hay Barn Spa at Daylesford for a Bamford rose upper body and facial treatment. As we arrive a little early I am seated in a beautiful room for lounging with a pot of herbal tea. The stylish, simple and soft decor with an expansive window looking out to green fields provides the perfect opportunity for a moment of quiet reflection. After a few minutes I am greeted with a warm smile from Kelly, my therapist for the morning. I am guided to an equally peaceful room to relax and nourish the soul. I am not easily pleased when it comes to massage, having been spoilt over the years from some exceptional therapists who have an unbelievable knowledge of anatomy and physiology of the human body. A gentle rub and application of oil has no appeal to me. I am more than capable of doing that myself, so If I’m going to dedicate an hour for a treatment then I’d really like to feel like the therapist cares about improving my state of wellbeing. Kelly certainly has that attention to care, and after an hour of massage using their own rose oil I am definitely blissed out. My boyfriend is also equally impressed with his Bamford deep tissue massage from Simontha, even going as far as saying that its one of the best massages he’s ever had. So after a look around the spa shop coveting the collection of Bamford body care, candles and herbal tea we float away to the Bamford Barn and Garden Shop. I fall in love with everything within the Bamford Barn – the Bamford fashion label is simple, sophisticated and stylish with beautiful fabrics and finishings – particularly the ultra luxe organic cashmeres. Same again with the Garden Shop – it might help if I had a garden though. So as I slowly make my way around the bits and bobs for a gardener’s needs I imagine myself with a veggie patch out the back of my imaginary house and plant the seeds for it to one day come into being. To gather some inspiration we venture outside for a walk around the farm with the sun shining on our backs and fresh air filling our lungs. A little while later our tummies start rumbling so its back to the Daylesford Organic Cafe for some lunch. So many delicious options, so difficult to decide on just one thing, so we share a selection of vegan-friendly options from the menu: cauliflower and mustard seed soup, salad, and risotto with pumpkin and pumpkin seeds. Every bite is heaven! It’s no wonder the cafe has won a number of awards year after year, including Great Taste Awards and a Michelin Bib Gourmand Award, two years running.
To take a little of Daylesford back home we head to the Farmshop and load our basket full of gourmet treats and fabulous homewares. Fruits, vegetables and herbs are picked each morning from the market garden and travel only a few yards in to the shop. What a treat! My biggest joy, however, is finding a bread board and net. Sounds a little silly, but I have been searching and searching for months for one that looks stylish enough to grace the kitchen bench. I have made a permanent note etched in the forefront of my mind, that if I’m ever again searching for that stylish something for the kitchen, to head back to Daylesford. They have it all!
As late afternoon approaches it’s time to depart, but it’s not good-bye, as we have grown rather fond of our day at Daylesford, and promise each other that we will return soon.
