Exfoliation is a necessary and basic step in your skin care ritual, as it encourages skin cell turnover, stimulates the production of new skin cells, and encourages the production of collagen and elastin, the basic building blocks of the skin.
In my opinion, the most effective way to care for your skin is to use products that work in harmony with the natural function of your skin to support the growth and renewal of healthy skin cells. To better understand why, please keep reading so that you can learn basic facts about skin structure that will hopefully explain why it is so important to avoid using harsh exfoliants that do frightening damage to the health and appearance of your skin.
What is exfoliation?
Exfoliation softens and improves the surface of your skin by removing dead skin layers, leaving you with clean, fresh, smooth skin.
Removing these dead skin layers not only removes built up grime, it clears the way for your skincare to penetrate better, and creates a smooth canvas for your makeup. Just imagine for a moment … if you don’t exfoliate your skin then you will most likely have a layer of dead skin cells upon the surface, so when you apply those incredibly beautiful beauty serums, oils and elixirs to your skin you’re applying it on dead skin cells, and the nourishing active ingredients won’t reach the deeper layers of your skin as easily as if those dead skin cells weren’t there.
How to choose an exfoliant
New skin cells form at the base of the epidermis and slowly move upwards, flattening out as they mature. Extreme exfoliation methods expose under-layers of immature cells which have not completed their growth and journey to the outer layer. Due to these layers not being fully mature they are therefore far more vulnerable to damage from external pollutants and the sun, one of the major factors in ageing and dry skin. This is why we strongly recommend gentle exfoliants that contain organic plant-based ingredients – such as fruit enzymes, rhassoul clay, finely ground oats and non-abrasive walnut shell – that work in harmony with the natural physiology of your skin, encouraging the skin’s natural renewal process, whilst delivering vitamins, anti-inflammatories, antioxidants and other nutrients that promote hydration and a dramatic improvement in the overall radiance and smoothness of your complexion.
How often should you use an exfoliant?
If your skin is hypersensitive, do not exfoliate until you have healed your skin with effective natural skin care. Once your skin is feeling less sensitive, exfoliate once a week with a gentle exfoliant.
For mature skin, exfoliate once a week.
For normal/dry/sensitive skin exfoliate one or two times a week.
For oily/combination skin, exfoliate two times per week.
